Overview

The Clémentine de la Féronnière Gallery pays tribute to Carolle Bénitah, the Franco-Moroccan artist who passed away in 2024, through an exhibition retracing more than twenty years of creative work.

"I began practicing photography in the early 2000s following profound personal upheavals. The fragile nature of life became clear to me, and photography served as an existential crutch. [...] From the very beginning, I rooted my practice in the realm of intimacy. Today, my work leads to broader themes such as family, desire, loss, mourning, and confinement—touching upon the universal. [...] The philosopher Jacques Derrida wrote: ‘What cannot be said must not be silenced, but written instead.’ Writing and drawing are ways to resist silence. I speak of the silence of women in the face of their desires, and the difficulty of accepting their bodies as desiring objects."

Exploring various mediums such as photography, embroidery, writing, and installation, Carolle Bénitah reconstructs a narrative where the personal and the collective converge—where artistic gesture becomes an act of transformation, resistance, and remembrance.
