In situ, dans les coulisses de l’Opéra de Paris

From September 2013 to July 2014, the photographer Pierre-Elie de Pibrac has been following on a day to day basis, the life inside Paris Opera National Ballet.
An entire season, a historical and pivotal one as it marks the departure of Nicolas Le Riche and bears the shadow of the passage of power from Brigitte Lefèvre to Benjamin Millepied.

Beyond these important events, the photographer, day after day, has blended into the background to work on three different series In Situ. In order to deliver a raw and direct emotion he used – for the series entitled “Confidences” – only black and white film. His camera is totally silent (no noise of the shutter while he shoots) and since he uses a 23mm lens, he is forced to get as close as possible to the dancers.
On the other hand, the two other series presented in this ensemble called for color. Through a new technique and a new visual approach the series “Catharsis” belongs to the movement of pictorial abstraction. This series results from a research project into the energy emanating from the dancers and how it diffuses into space. The force of the art of ballet dancing is offered to the viewer through a new transcendental form.

And finally “Analogia” illustrates through 14 compositions, the echo, the interplay between the dancers and the walls of the majestic Opera Garnier building. Shot with a slightly modified large format camera, this final series emphasizes the vastness of this theater and the influence it has on the dancers who evolve here.
